One of the oldest sweets in the world, Turkish delight was traditionally wrapped in special lace handkerchiefs.\u00a0<br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Karagoz and Hacivat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/8\/8d\/Karagoz_figures.jpg\" alt=\"Karagoz figures.jpg\"\/><figcaption><strong>Karag\u00f6z<\/strong>&nbsp;(literally&nbsp;<em>Blackeye<\/em>&nbsp;in Turkish) and&nbsp;<strong>Hacivat<\/strong>&nbsp;(shortened in time from &#8220;Hac\u0131 \u0130vaz&#8221; meaning &#8220;\u0130vaz the Pilgrim&#8221;, and also sometimes written as&nbsp;<strong>Hacivad<\/strong>) are the lead characters of the traditional&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turkey\">Turkish<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shadow_play\">shadow play<\/a>, popularized during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ottoman_Empire\">Ottoman<\/a>&nbsp;period and then spread to most nation states of the Ottoman Empire. It is most prominent in Turkey,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greece\">Greece<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bosnia_and_Herzegovina\">Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adjara\">Adjara<\/a>&nbsp;(autonomous republic of Georgia). In Greece, Karag\u00f6z is known by his local name&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karagiozis\">Karagiozis<\/a>; in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he is known by his local name&nbsp;<strong>Kara\u0111oz<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turkish culture is quite different and special.
